Program Objective

The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) programme at the Africa School of Politics and Governance is designed to produce competent, ethical, and socially responsible legal practitioners who possess a deep understanding of legal principles, critical thinking skills, and the practical expertise necessary to serve justice, uphold the rule of law, and contribute meaningfully to the development of African societies and the global legal community.

Specific Programme Objectives

The programme aims to achieve the following specific objectives:

1. Knowledge and Understanding

To provide students with comprehensive knowledge of the foundational principles, doctrines, and rules of national, regional, and international law, including constitutional law, criminal law, civil law, commercial law, human rights law, and customary African legal systems.

2. Analytical and Critical Thinking

To develop students’ ability to analyse complex legal problems, interpret statutes and case law, evaluate competing legal arguments, and apply sound legal reasoning to real-world scenarios.

3. Legal Research and Writing Competence

To equip students with advanced skills in legal research, drafting of legal documents, preparation of pleadings, contracts, opinions, and academic legal writing in line with professional standards.

4. Advocacy and Practical Skills

To cultivate practical legal skills through moot courts, legal clinics, internships, and simulated client interactions, enabling graduates to confidently represent clients, negotiate, mediate, and argue cases effectively.

5. Ethical and Professional Conduct

To instill in students a strong sense of legal ethics, professional responsibility, integrity, and commitment to justice, ensuring they uphold the dignity of the legal profession and serve the public interest.

6. Constitutional and Human Rights Awareness

To foster a deep appreciation of constitutionalism, democratic values, human rights, and the rule of law, empowering graduates to defend fundamental freedoms and challenge injustice wherever it arises.

7. African-Centred Legal Perspective

To ground students in the legal realities of Africa, including customary law, regional instruments such as the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the unique socio-political contexts of African states, while also exposing them to global legal frameworks.

8. Leadership and Governance

To prepare graduates to serve not only as legal practitioners but also as leaders in governance, policy-making, public administration, and civil society, thereby contributing to the transformation of political governments into legally grounded systems of governance.

9. Interdisciplinary Competence

To integrate knowledge from political science, economics, theology, philosophy, and social sciences, enabling students to address multifaceted legal and societal challenges with a holistic perspective.

10. Lifelong Learning and Professional Growth

To nurture a culture of continuous learning, research, and adaptability so that graduates remain responsive to evolving legal landscapes, technological advancements, and emerging fields such as cyber law, data protection, and artificial intelligence regulation.

11. Service to Community and Society

To inspire graduates to use their legal knowledge for the advancement of justice, social equity, economic development, and the protection of vulnerable groups within their communities and beyond.

12. Entrepreneurial and Innovative Thinking

To encourage students to explore innovative legal careers, including legal technology, alternative dispute resolution, consultancy, and the establishment of independent legal practices that respond to modern-day needs.
